The issue with Hybrid car yearly state fees

Hybrid cars in the state of Ohio require that you pay $100 extra dollar per year. That’s $8.33 per month which could be looked at like your paying an extra eight dollars in gas each month even if you don’t drive. I did some number with the corolla hybrid as an example where its like you have to drive about 5000 or more miles to pay less in gas and fees combined compared to a regular gas model.

Corolla

36.5 mpg combined

1000 miles/ year = $82.19 in gas ($3/gallon)

3000 miles/year = $246.57

4000 miles/ year = $328.76

5000 miles/ year = $410.95

Corolla hybrid

49.5mpg combined

$100 yearly hybrid registration fee in Ohio

1000 miles driven in one year with yearly registration fee = $160.06

3000 miles/year + registration = $281.81

4000 miles/ year + registration = $342.42

5000 miles/ year + registration = $403.03

I think it would be better for everyone if we didn’t charge yearly fees on hybrid and electric cars. We could increase the yearly fee evenly for all car owners where the fee doesn’t affect which type of car you choose to buy, since some won’t want to pay the fee anymore, especially the elderly who don’t drive as much. This same idea can go towards electric cars where you have to pay $200 a year even if you don’t drive much making your cost of electricity per mile driven variable depending on how much you drive yearly.

Cars like the Honda CRZ get like 36/39 mpg but with the hybrid yearly fees, it could be comparable to driving 32 mpg, 30 mpg, 35 mpg gasoline cars.
